Hana Kraft

Hana Kraft

Basic introduction

As you might have noticed, Mrs. Kraft isn't from our country, but from Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. Even though she has been teaching at our school only for a year, she doesn't lack teaching practice at all. I think that her biggest experience has to be teaching at the University of Maryland, USA. Nowadays, she's teaching not only at Grammar school Šlapanice, but at Grammar school Křenová and Österreich Institut as well. This gives us a better way to prepare for the ÖSD certificate. She has always taught German.

Teaching style

She only uses worksheets, she´s often adding accompanying videos as well. In our lessons, she speaks only German and pretends, that she doesn´t understand Czech. However scary it might sound, you will get used to it pretty quickly and it also gets you ready for real situations. Another big plus is, that you practise a phrase “Ich verstehe nicht” and learn, how to work with a dictionary. We talk about various believable and unbelievable events and traditions a lot. Sometimes you´ll think what the hell are those Germans doing. Tuition takes place not only in school desks, it goes in an interactive form as well. We went to Vienna in the middle of December, where we tasted the Christmas atmosphere and practised German. It was nice, only the essay we had to write right after was a bit annoying.

Interview

Almost 30 years, 20 years in Czechia.

Where did You teach before?

I have started at the University of Maryland in the USA, then I used to teach at Goethe institut, language school in Brno, German Grammar school, at Österreich Institute in Brno as well and now I teach here, at grammar school Šlapanice.

What and where did You study and why German?

Romance and Slavic studies, literary studies and German at university in Würzburg and in Heidelberg.

What motivated You to teach?

I like working with people. They are full of temperament. Especially young people are very nice.

How would You entice students on studying German?

We have a lot foreigners working in Germany, so work and study at university. In Germany we have a lot of universities. Another reason is that Czech Republic boards with two German speaking countries. And also German used to be an official Czech language.

And last but not least, why do You teach in Šlapanice and how do You enjoy teaching here?

It was offered to me to teach here. I also teach at Grammar school Křenová. But I prefer teaching in Šlapanice, especially in sexta.
